Swimming Momentum and Arc continuum — Triathlete Magazine

This is a ground breaking article that many in the Total Immersion swimming community and founder Terry Laughlin found blasphemous. It was not intended to offend, but to instruct and look at swimming instruction from a different point of view. While a lot has improved in teaching (mine and theirs) since this article was published my constant has been sustaining bilateral tempo and a continuum of movement in the swimming stroke. Too much gliding (total immersion training) and the teaching of this method are laden with errors no more evident than with the neophyte, recreational and competitive cross-over athlete. NOTE: The "TI" system is sound on many levels and provides quality group training and teaching.

Body Posture - excerpt Triathlete's Edge - Marc Evans - Human Kinetics Publishers

In this excerpt a brief discussion about the importance of posture when swimming, cycling and running. Functional movement screenings are the core of my coaching program whether working with self-coached, athlete's being coached and teaching or working with coaches and their athletes.

Base Preparation - excerpt Triathlete's Edge - Human Kinetics Publishers

Base training is perhaps, the most fundamental element for endurance training. And this can take years to accumulate the biomechanical, physiological and adaptations before obtaining peak performance. Through well-designed workouts and planning athlete's working towards improving performance are well-rewarded through Base Preparation training.

Race Day - excerpt Triathlete's Edge - Human Kinetics Publishers

At the very same moment all athletes are faced with an identical decision. The start of a race begins and each athlete must "go". How they sustain effort and what pre-race and during competition strategies they use differ almost as much as fingerprints. Yet, there are fundamentals which should be considered and this brief excerpt provides an insight into those.

Moving Bar of Intensity - Triathlete Magazine

This on one of my favorite articles as it has tremendous practical use for endurance athletes. Managing intensity and energy are learned over many years of training and competition. Having a "scale" that facilitates more accurate cognitive management of intensity for any distance interval, workout or event is a perfect asset for an athlete and coach.

Stride Rate: What Gets Measured Gets Done - Triathlete Magazine

Running is about the efficient transference of energy from the support and stance and push off from one foot to the other. Improving stride rate and reducing braking forces can help athletes achieving better running economy and faster times.

The Power of Will - Endure Plus Online

Deliberate training and focused resolve are parts of every successful program. I believe whether placing first of last that every athlete can make use of cognitive strategies for improving performance. And it can be fun doing so and make the experience all the more rewarding.

Cycling: Peak Tips for the Core - Triathlete Magazine

In this article, Marc Evans writes about the importance of training the inner abdominal muscles and pelvic stabilizers of the core and trunk.

Thirteen Coaching Tips

I wrote these tips many years ago, but they have stood the test of time. I definitely could add many more, but having fewer effective and practical handbook type guides is best.

The Eyes Have It

This is an article about relaxing and calming the eyes and how this can have a positive impact of training and performance during competition.
